Police arrests a fake doctor for aborting a 5-month-old pregnancy

26-year-old Akilapa Johnson has been arrested by the Oyo State Police Command for carrying out a life threatening abortion on a 23-year-old Barakat, when he had no formal training as a medical doctor, Punchng reports.

The State Commissioner of Police, Leye Oyebade, said Johnson lured Barakat to abort a 5-month-old pregnancy which resulted in serious complications. The process left Barakat in critical condition at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, where she is presently lying ill.
The abortion was carried out in the Johnson’s apartment which served as clinic located in a slum at Sasa, Ibadan. Investigation revealed that Johnson, a Secondary School Leaving Certificate holder, was only trained as a paramedic nurse and a first aid giver.
In spite of his limited knowledge of medicine, he was consistently treating unsuspecting patients who mistook him for a qualified doctor. Exhibits recovered from him are two pieces of stethoscopes, two pieces of Plaster of Paris bandages, four pairs of hand gloves, injection and syringe.
Johnson admitted to the crime, saying he had his training as a paramedic nurse in Port Harcourt. His words, “It was after taking some pills that she developed the complication. I am regretting my actions now. I am only looking for a means of survival.”
