A Federal High Court sitting in Enugu, has granted administrative bail to one Ugochukwu Oguegbulu, who allegedly imported fake drugs through the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu.
The suspect, Oguegbulu, pleaded not guilty to a three count charge brought against him by the National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and the Federal Government.
The charge included: importation of fake; counterfeit; and unregistered Gyno-Daktarin (Miconazole Nitrate) drugs impounded on August 23, 2016.
NAFDAC’s counsel, Mr Umar Shamaki, prayed the court to remand the suspect in prison custody pending the determination of the suit.
“It also prayed the court to set a date for accelerated hearing of the matter since the agency has ample evidence to conclude the suit,’’ Shamaki said.
The counsel to the accused, Mr Chukwunosu Chinwuba, prayed the court to give the accused administrative bail since he had always reported to all NAFDAC summons personally without any failure.
“Even when he was invited in far-a-way Lagos in NAFDAC’s office, he still attended to the invitation and duly stayed until the investigation was thoroughly done.
“Today, he is still here on self-volition. And I am also guaranting that he will always make it to court on all the sitting dates,’’ Chinwuba appealed.
In her ruling, Justice Dugbo Oghoghorie, granted the accused administrative bail as he had shown commitment to answer to all summons concerning his case.
“The case is also adjourned to February 23, 2017 for hearing. And I am imploring the suspect’s counsel, Chinwuba, to ensure that his client duly appear in court on that day,’’ Oghoghorie said.
