How I got my first paid job as a copywriter + some interesting lessons you can pick from it.
A little background; my coming into media was a matter of chance. It wasn't planned. I saw myself doing it and it's been rewarding ever since, but as a result I wasn't well groundedI in media stuff. I didn't know about a lot of things and few things I know were learned on the job.
I started off as a storyteller, writing interesting stories people loved reading. My DAD was my greatest fan, he read my earliest works which included unpublished novels I wrote in 20 leaves notebook.
After each story, he would reinforce me with a pack of Big Bite biscuit (do you remember this biscuit?). While in school doing the whole science thing, the media part kept popping up, as I would organise events, spice it up with creative ideas, be part of editorial committee and bring in new ideas. This continued for a while as a hobby until I graduated and took my writing to Facebook (which remains my social media first love till date).

Here on Facebook, my fan base grew, I had a lot of people engaging on my posts. This attracted my first job as what I now learned to be 'affiliate marketing'. I helped vendors improve sales by sharing their stuff on my wall. That was good, until I discovered a new brand in my town. I followed up their content and I wasn't satisfied with the manner they presented it and I felt I had something better to offer.
I mailed them and they set up a meeting.
I mailed them and they set up a meeting.
Note; this was my first formal meeting & then I didn't know there was a thing called copy writing. I just took myself ,what I had in mind to offer & a few tips from Wendy Williams which she called 'tools of trade'.
These tools according to her included dressing the part and coming to any business meeting looking like the bag of money you came to secure. I did that and somehow convinced myself that it was going to work, I also held out my car key so visible you'd think I came to market the car key 😂.
The meeting began and for a few minutes I knew deep down that I was messing up. I was so nervous, I didn't have enough knowledge about appropriate terms to use at any given instance, so I went on rambling.
The only constant thing was my smile, I kept smiling while I presented by pitch while that little voice kept saying 'Nne, fuck up, big fuck up!!!'
I ended my pitch and the visibly not so impressed CEO gave me a weak smile and said they would get back to me.

That was those kind of 'we will get back to you', you didn't need a soothsayer to spell the lies out for you. I knew they weren't going to call back, I needed to act fast while I still had their attention. While I rested and thought of new ways to approach them, I listened to radio.
This was a period I challenged myself to always listen to traditional radio. I bought myself a little radio & played it every morning & whenever I'm not busy. That day I got an inspiration from the radio.I ran straight to my phone.
Guess what I did? I recorded a few minutes of voice note, explaining myself, my pitch and my plans to this company. I was shamelessly hungry to bring in my idea. Some call it passion,I call it hunger . It's my greatest motivation.
I didn't even edit it. I mailed the voice note to them.
I was called back again. This time I had written five copies for them in readiness for the job. I wasn't sure they would give me the job, but should they give me, I am already READY!

This time the CEO asked if I could do all that I said I would, and also praised my persistence. He said it's a rare trait to find in youths nowadays.'Well, I'm a nowadays youth, utilise my service sir', I said in my head, but outwardly I smiled.
Based on my prepared copies, I gave him some insights & he was more impressed.
We talked about fee. (Truth is, at that point I hadn't thought of my fee because I was more interested in what I would offer) but at the end, we reached a reasonable compromise and that was it guys.

I started working immediately and yes, they were impressed and my services converted customers for them, while I chopped life with the money they paid me 😎
Every hustler deserves 'OYEL' in Phyno's voice 😅

P.S. if you're a business owner reading this, I could do some magic for your buisness that drive in sales. Just say the word!
Later on from a vacancy post I read online, I discovered that there was a thing called copy writing & that's what I've been doing.
Okurrr, I edited my bio & added my found job to it.😉
Ever since, I've been growing & still learning

Did you learn anything from my story?
If you did, can you point them out in the comment section?
If you didn't, can you go through it again to get them, I didn't go through this stress for you not to get a thing 🙄
