
Emotions on Wednesday ran high, when an auto crash involving a commuter bus whose driver lost control sending the vehicle hurtling into the bush, killing eight passengers on board instantly while 12 others were severely injured.
The bus,with number plate AKW KTD 58 LG was said to be conveying passengers from a pilgrimage centre, Ezeagu Local Government Area, Enugu State to Aba, Abia State when the unfortunate incident occurred.
This came on a day Police authorities in Enugu State, also, arraigned one Ibrahim Adamu, from Zamfara State, a suspected herdsman, arrested with AK-47 rifle and about 24 live rounds of ammunition in Enugu, before the Chief Magistrate Court 1, Enugu East Local Government Area, presided over by D.K Ekoh.
Adamu was arrested by the Police last August 29 at Affa, in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State where he was alleged to be terrorizing members of the community even as his cattle ravaged farmlands in the area.
He was arraigned on three count charge of illegally possessing and having under his control AK-47 rifle with 24 rounds of live ammunition in contravention of the Firearms Act and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 6(a) and punishable under section 3(1) of the Robbery and firearms(special provision)Act Cap.R11 vol.14,laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004. While confirming both incidents in a statement to newsmen,Police Public Relations Officer,PPRO,Ebere Amaraizu,Superintendent of Police, said: ”The driver of the said vehicle later identified as one Kenneth Nwigwe a native of Enugwu-Ukwu, Anambra State but residing at Uratta, Aba, Abia State while coming from Enugu axis of the road and heading towards Port-Harcourt expressway of the road, had allegedly lost control careering into a bush and tumbled, leaving about eight persons including women and three children dead on the spot.
“The driver and twelve others with several degrees of injuries are receiving treatment at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, UNTH, Ituku-Ozalla while corpses of the eight yet-to-be identified victims were deposited at the hospital mortuary for identification, autopsy as well as collection.
“The Enugu state command of the Nigeria Police Force through its state traffic Unit have commenced a full scale investigation with a view to finding out the cause of the incident.”
