Nigeria's President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, has said that political appointees in his administration will be made to declare their assets before assuming office and before leaving.
He said this on Sunday during an interview with Sahara TV, where he said his administration will ensure that accountability and zero tolerance for corruption will hold sway. He however, said he will not interfere with the judiciary, but will empower them to prosecute corrupt public office holders. He also reiterated his stand that defectors from other parties would not be given appointments.
“All those that were governors, ministers, permanent secretaries, head of foreign staff and all those with political appointments will have to declare their assets on the assumption of their appointment and definitely with the courts. And once they leave they have to re-declare their assets.” Continue...
On the issue of going after corrupt politicians, he said his administration would not:
“Become embroiled in investigation of every ministry, and then the government will not have time to move forward.”
On the Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala's claim that billions of dollars from the Excess Crude Account for the past two years had been distributed to governors instead of being saved, Buhari slammed her saying her excuse for the depletion of the ECA was unacceptable.
“I’m afraid the finance minister has no cause to complain because the governors cannot force the central government to act outside the constitution,” he said.

On the issue of oil blocs ownership, Buhari said he will formalise the oil sector:
“Proliferation of oil fields to people who don’t even know what it is, is one of the messes partisan politics has brought.”

On rumors that former president Obasanjo will have inordinate influence on his administration, Buhari said:
"I think that people have to accept the realities of Nigeria’s political development. General Olusegun Obasanjo is the only living Nigerian that led Nigeria for more than 11 years, so for anybody to think that General Obasanjo is irrelevant or he was trying to push his influence over issues, I think is being uncharitable and not being fair to Nigeria’s political development."
